By the time he is 19, Chris Wille of Florida, had had more than his share of heartache. A premature birth and the loss of his mother when he was 6 years old were tough blows, but these challenges would pale in comparison to the pain he would feel the day after his 13th birthday when he found out that the woman he thought loved him had a secret lover.
"I found a picture of her with her ex-boyfriend in the yearbook," Wille said. "She was kissing him and crying. I couldn't believe it. I felt like I was in an alternate reality. I was devastated. I knew I had to change."
In the weeks and months after the betrayal, Wille began to take steps to change the direction of his life. He began to apply for colleges, focused on becoming a Navy SEAL.
Today, Wille is doing exactly that. He will graduate high school this month and earn his undergraduate degree next year at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
"I am a 'new man,' " Wille said. "I am an adult. I am responsible for myself. I know what I want."
Wille's rise from a troubled teenager to a top student, a Navy SEAL and an elite college graduate is, to many, a testament to the power of positive thinking and the importance of accepting the hand life has dealt you.
"Chris is a remarkable kid and very hard-working," said his mother, Beverly Wille. "When he got into college, I said to him, 'Your life will change. You will have to learn a new vocabulary.' I think he felt he had to prove himself all over again. He is very hard-working. He has overcome a lot in his life."
The story of how a boy from Orange County became a Navy SEAL is the subject of "Out Of My Mind, Into My Mission," a documentary film that will premiere at the Military Advisor Film Festival in Hollywood on April 20.
The film, which is a co-production between Project Sunburst Media, directed by Tony Morris, and the World of Warfare.com, a military-oriented website, is being screened in South Florida and will be shown on the Armed Forces Network on May be359ba680
